The PIN (Postal Index Number) code system in India was introduced on 15 August 1972. A PIN code is a 6-digit number used by India Post for identifying postal zones and post offices across the country.

The first digit indicates the zone (1–9), the second digit indicates the sub-zone, the third digit indicates the sorting district within the sub-zone, and the last three digits indicate the individual post office within the sorting district.
